Hi Dutchy --
No, I wouldn't dip my reeds in bleach.
Sterisol is cheap, if you really want to go this route. Or use the Scope or Listerine that you've probably already got in the house. But go easy on it, and rinse the reed off afterwards.
My best information (from my clarinet-playing husband, who is an MD, and his mother, who is also an MD who specialized in infectious disease) is that the likelihood of anything germy surviving on a new reed (double or single) is slim to none. Every reed I've ever gotten has come to me dry as a bone, and bugs just don't survive under those circumstances, IF there were any there to start with.
In our over-regulated age, I am more than certain that if there were any public health issues regarding oboe reeds, we would have heard about it long ago.
On a different note, congratulations to you for moving on to page 6A! I remember fondly the experience of going back to the beginning of the Intermediate Rubank book (after I had worked through the book) and just whizzing through things that had initially been very laborious for me. Same thing happened with the Barrett studies, which I initially thought would cause me to expire from asphyxia before I could ever play them. I put them away. Came back months later -- voila! They were easy!
You'll get there. It does take time and effort, though.
Susan
