I liked your comment about Hinke. If you think that book's a mass of dots, you ain't seen nothing yet! ;-)
This book is really not suitable right at the beginning. Some popular books in the UK are the Peter Walstall 'Learn as you play' books and Abracadabra books, both usually found very easily. They're much more user friendly for the complete beginner, and they have some great melodies that are easy to play and make you feel you've achieved something.
