OK, here goes with the answers.

Learning disability, not that I know of. I've always found learning new skills reasonably straightforward and was a high-flier academically in my youth. (Which also anwers a later question! I'm in my early forties.)

As a child I toyed with guitar, violin and trombone but it really was toying and not study; no music reading went on beyond guitar tab, and that was, um, 35 years ago!

Rhythmically I'm pretty good. Clapping and counting are easy. In fact I can read the rhythm of a piece with relative ease; it's the pitch values that are eluding me.

I am indeed learning music reading from scratch. I realise it's a new language but I guess I'm just being too impatient with myself

Finally, thanks for the book pointers; my teacher has me using Hinke which though it teaches good lessons in its studies, I find the layout far too busy and closely packed and it sometimes looks like a page of random dots.
