I took the pillars out as well (the thumbplate on Yamaha 821TP oboes wasn't much better than that fitted to a Regent! But Yamaha did redesign it later on), but I preferred the feel of having the thumbplate to rest my left thumb on - kinda like the thumb button on saxes and you rock onto the back 8ve key instead of pressing it. And it also makes sure you keep your left thumb in contact with the instrument at all times.
So long as the LH1 fingerplate can be screwed down so it's almost closed I can get on with pure conservatoire system instruments, but do prefer dual system as it's the best of both worlds and does things neither thumbplate or conservatoire system can do all that easily - such as G-Bb and G-C tremolos.
