Hate to be a party pooper but I doubt you can get a "good sub-$1000" instrument. I've seen some decent student instruments for $1500 (Fox 330, Selmer 101, old Lorees or old Cabarts) but nothing under $1000. And if you do buy one for $1000, chances are you'll have to have a full overhaul which will cost another $1000 anyways.
