I assume you took the spring out as well, or used a thimble? :-)
On my old Marigaux Strasser with added thumbplate, all that was necessary was to unhook the thumbplate spring. Conservatoire from then on.
I also suffered the B&H Regent oboe in my youth. My teacher was so upset with the poor quality of this instrument that he traveled to the manufacturer to make his displeasure known, but got nowhere. He offered to help them redesign the keywork. I did my Grade 5 on that instrument - don't ask me how.
