So far, it seems great and the staples are easier to grip and pull out of the instrument if the repair is at the top end."
It was good enough for Baroque oboists (and shawm players way before them) as it is still for Viennese players, so why not? You could use waxed thread which means you won't need to glue it, and it'll be self-sealing.
Now, dare I mention bagpipes?
