I got out my old student oboe and found that except for the first key on the L hand there are no holes in either the second and third key; watching in the mirror my fingers tend to slide off either or both holes on my "new" oboe. And the student model had no split D. So I was not having this problem in my past oboist incarnation because there were no holes to miss.
It's been great having the feedback and suggestions from this board; I am going through the scales in the Weait book doing the ones that have lot of LH Eflat "opportunities": going slowly and over and over. My family is slowly going mad.
The only mirror that allows me to see my hands is the full length one in the bathroom; nice resonance in there!
Squashy ball still looks good as my hands tire out early but I will beat it into submission eventually.
Taking up the oboe again has been a very humbling experience.
I do love my "ebay Loree" though; now and again it gives me a peak at the possibilities; the low notes in particular are gorgeous.
