Well, I have found considerable use for the low Bb. I'm playing in a trio (oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoon -- a really nice sound combination, BTW) doing "flexible" arrangements, and it is very nice to be able to switch parts with the clarinet (usually, the 2nd part) now and then.
We've been playing Christmas carols this month (duh!), and having one of the other voices take the top line is a great way to inject a little variety into what could otherwise be a deadly series of repetitions.
Does anybody have any titles of good, interesting arrangements for woodwind trio/4-tet/5-tet?
I've got one: the "Gazebo Woodwind Trio Series", arranged by Bill Holcombe. The arrangements are creative and not difficult, and include parts for flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bass clarinet, and bassoon.
