Hi oboists:
I am finally getting the hang of reed making. Some of my first successful reeds have an interesting attribute however, and I need some opinions from some of you oboe oldies:
I am very accustom to playing on really hard store-bought Edmund Nielsen blue thread reeds requiring quite a bit of abdominal support but not much embouchure support. Nice reeds. They sound super nice on all registers but like I said, need quite a bit of strength on the air pressure. As long as I use my abs, they’re not tough to play on and sound awesome.
Now, with my homemade reeds I am trying to make them easier blowing and sound nice on all registers. Not an impossible task, however, I am finding that when I hit second octave A and higher, I am having to really tighten up the embouchure to prevent squeaking. It’s not a big deal, just something I’m having to cope with.
Do you guys see this with your reeds? I’m wondering if I should proceed in this direction or ... make them more resistant to prevent this. I don’t want to start any bad habits...either way works at this point but it would nice to get some input. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
Jay
