I sometimes use the backwards method, starting slowly. Also it helps to identify the difficult finger changes & work on those separately for a bit then put the passage back together sometimes altering the rhythmic pattern so that the difficult changes occur after a longer note, but overall keeping in tempo, giving the old brain more time to think about those changes.
