What vboboe said.
I really don't worry too much about what it looks like in the beginning - I just want to get the bark off, block out the tip and back, thin the tip and back and clip it. Then continue to work until it crows.
In the beginning (35+ years ago) it would take me forever to make a reed. These days I don't have the luxury of time and need to be as efficient in my work as possible. Like this morning - I didn't like the reeds in my box at last night's rehearsal, so after massive quantities of coffee, I made a reed for the 10:30 rehearsal and the concert tonight. :-)
I don't know if it will work tomorrow, though!
Like Mr. Mack said - work fast at the beginning and slow down at the end.
