I scrape the tip a bit to thin it out, then open it using a metal plaque that's had its edges sharpened by the knife during regular use. Advantage: using a pointy metal plaque makes it easy to insert the plaque near the tip and not damage the reed; sometimes i apply a bit of pressure with my left thumb at the wrap while holding the reed edgewise against my left hand fingers to open up a very slight gap in the reed's right edge to make insertion of the plaque with my right hand even easier. This along with a lot of other little tricks is a thing i learned from my teacher! Reedmaking even more than oboe playing is an apprenticeship skill!
