How many clarinets do you have?
Author: leonardA
Date:   2008-11-27 00:48

So often on the board I read about people having several clarinets. I'm just curious how many various people own and why so many? To keep it simple, let's just say how many Bb soprano clarinets do you have?

I have two--a Vito resotone that I bought when I started studying clarinet and a Buffet E-11 that I stepped up to about two years after that.

I currently have two Leblanc LL's, a model 40 Noblet, a model 45 Noblet, two wooden Pedler's with seven rings, two wooden Pedlers with six rings, one ebonite Pedler. I had two more Pedler's that I recently donated to a program that provides instruments to school children.

The reason I have so many is that I like older vintage clarinets.

4 Silver Key Plated recent model R-13's (2 of which are Prestiges), a Selmer 10G Bb (was Peter Simenaur's spare), and a Selmer Signature Bb.

Then there are the 3 Buffet Internationals, and Yamaha 34's that I have for students.

A Lyons, and a Kinderclari for little, little kids (my kids played em)

and lastly a Clear Buffet B-12 for breath fogging student demonstrations.

So 14 in total

I really only need 10 as that's a full set of bowling pins ......... ;)

Too many. :-)

Marigaux 351 RS (main honker)
Amati 211 (outdoors)
Amati 201 (wet outdoors)
Leblanc Stencil Metal Clarinet (outdoors, show)

These are the ones that I have around me and they are played regularly. In the attic there are two Bundy Mazzeos, a vintage full-Boehm Amati and a wooden Vito VSP waiting to be overhauled. A resotone Vito is currently loaned out to a band buddy.

The to-be-overhauled clarinets eventually get sold, or move up in the inventory and displace others.
I limited myself to enumerating only the Bbs...including the Eefer, the C, the alto and the two Basses it'd be 14 clarinets...

I guess most people have 1 (or an A/Bb pair), and most of them will not record that here. So I wouldn't bother extrapolating any statistical significance form this thread. :-)

Yamaha CS
Carl Fischer "Excelsior" (early 1900's-doughnut key)
Alexandre Paris metal 4 piece (1920-30's?))
Jerome Thibouville Lamy Albert High Pitch (late 1800's)
Jerome Thibouville Lamy Boehm High Pitch- (late 1800's)

Why do I have all of these? My Yamaha is my player (Got in new in High School, now I started playing again just for fun), but the other clarinets are just collectors. With anything I collect, I like the obscure, forgotten, neglected, and weird.

Like you asked, sticking with Bb soprano clarinets - I have 4.

Why: One is my main clarinet. One was my main clarinet before, and is now my backup. I keep it because I decided it's worth having a backup. One was my main clarinet before the backup and is now the backup to the backup. I will probably sell that one eventually. The last one is a metal clarinet which I bought because I wanted a metal clarinet. I played it a little and still occasionally practice on it (has a pretty nice sound), but I don't really need it and in some ways regret buying it.

Join the club!

At the beginning, my wife, who is totally, utterly uninterested in anything musical, called my collection 'those bloody flutes'!

Our children also started playing instruments, so the piano, guitars, trumpets and sax helped to shift her attention from the clarinets.

I won't mention the oboe, but the good thing is that it looks to her like a clarinet. I've been playing it for two years, but I guess that it still sounds like 'a bloody flute'!

Wow. That's a lot of clarinets. I basically just have one, but kindsorta two. My main one is my lovely pre-1940 wooden Conn, and there's a Vito Resotone that I started out on, but belongs to a friend. I can use that whenever I need it.
I'm also planning on buying an Orsi and Weir soon, for university, and I would really like to buy a metal clarinet, but oh no, dearest mother won't let me get one that I won't play basically every day.
I'm assuming my mother doesn't read this!

A or Bb sopranos:
~50 Selmer
~10 Bettoney
~5 Penzel Mueller
~5 Conn
~5 Pedler
plus a few odds and ends

The Selmers are a full boehm pair and a standard boehm pair of most models (every model, someday...), a metal (standard) boehm and a metal albert, and a bunch of early 'Brevete' with a wide variety of keywork.

Why so many? There are three main reasons.
1) I learn about clarinets by trying them out.
2) I take risks at ebay that have sometimes paid off very nicely but have also left me with some instruments not worth the cost of restoring or the trouble of reselling.
3) I am pathologically acquisitive.

Well I have one Bb, an R13 Buffet, but I mostly play the others:

Buffet Prestige Eefer
Buffet Prestige Alto
Leblanc Basset horn
Buffet Prestige bass
Selmer contra alto

I'm looking for an A as I'm borrowing one now. Haven't found one I've liked in the used department.

Find the others more challenging and in most of my jobs they want me to play the other ones too. Bb's abound.

1 Eb, 7 Bb, 3 A, 1 Bb (Oehler System). Total- 12ish
It all started off with one and then I upgraded to a better clarinet because the first was really bad in a lot of ways. I kept upgrading by buying things on ebay and used clarinets from people I know. Most of them used to be my "main" clarinets, while I was saving money to buy something better. Maybe if I had a good set from the start, I would not have needed even one more...?
A couple are super cheap "no name" or "low name" that I used for repair experements with bore changes and intonation, etc. Those have been made into just about garbage, but I did learn a lot about intonation adjustment from them.

The really heavy hitters haven't posted!

Here's my contribution to the GAS problem. Actually I've recently divested a few to various school programs and band mates.

A: Leblanc Symphonie 3 17/6
Bb: Leblanc Symphonie 3 19/7
Couesnon Monopole (1953ish)
Kohlert Winnenden full boehm
Kohlert Kraslitz 17/6 (1930ish)
Kohlert LP 17/7
Selmer Signet Special (my High School horn)
Eb: Carl Fischer Buffet
Kohlert Kraslitz (1930ish)
Alto: Bundy

The next question is how many mouthpieces and barrels do folks have?

Five, counting both Bb's and A's.

Selmer Signature set in Bb and A.

Selmer Centered Tone in Bb.

Selmer Series 9 in A.

Linton 3W in Bb (probably for sale, just don't need it).

I keep the older Selmers as backups in case the new ones need to be in the shop.

Guitarists can be much worse as collectors, I think. I was in a friend's shop one Saturday afternoon...he was busy conducting inventory and pricing because a collector had decided to thin out his collection a bit...by selling off some 70+ guitars.

Fortunately, my husband is an enabler. We carry walkie-talkies at flea markets, the better to foster each other's manias. He doesn't ask me how many clarinets and saxophones I've got. I don't ask him how many flashlights, wristwatches and fountain pens he's got. ;-)

My "professional" instruments are:
R13 Bb
Festival A
R13 Eb

I have a bunch of plastic ones around, along with an intermediate Leblanc (a Regency model...it's apparently only available through a small chain around Michigan...I never really could find any literature on it). These ones I mostly keep around for sentimental value.

My current set that I use seems pretty sporadic. The Bb and A really don't match each other at all as far as sound or feel goes. I wasn't really looking for an A to match my Bb when I was shopping, mostly because I picked out my Bb at WWBW when I was a junior in highschool, and consequently, it's not that great of an instrument. I'd love to start shopping for a new Bb (I really had my heart set on a Festival that I played at MSU's clarinet day in '07, and I may have the means by which to track it down, AKA the serial number and the vendor it went to after clarinet day), but, being an undergrad in college, I really don't have the means by which to do so. That, and I just got my Eb. It's a used vintage instrument (I think when I checked the serial number it placed it somewhere in '77), so I got it at a cheaper price (less than 2k), but it still put a big enough dent (for lack of a more appropriate word...crater would probably work) in my bank account that I'll be playing my current Bb for the next few years.

I know it's a rarity on this board - only one. My R-13 Bb.

I'd like to get a back-up one of these days. A friend of mine told me about a used horn he has and will sell so maybe I'll check that one out.

Like many others on here, I know we're not supposed to list them all but rounding out the arsenal of horns: Older Evette Bass clarinet that I got from Dave S., a Chu-berry alto sax and a yamaha flute. All get played pretty regularly. I'd like to find a nice tenor sax one of these days too.

My hubby has an expensive hobby or two as well so we try to "keep it fair" as far as new acquisitions!

I collect metal clarinets and have more than sixty. Most are not restored. My regulars include some Penzel Muller double walled models, a Silva Bet full boehm, a Silva Bet in A, a couple Conn 524s. Also in the collection are some silver kings, a King MicroSonic, some Bueschers (730 and 740), some Selmer including a full boehm, a Triebert double walled, some Conn high pitch Wonder models (albert) and the low pitch Armored; Haynes in A, Bb and Eb; and two no name models from the 1800s, one of which almost certainly was made by Oliver Ditson while still in England and a high pitched Eb with only 6 paddle keys. I have a few other alberts -- a Silva Bet, a Buescher, and one in A but I forget the make.

I plan to do a complete inventory and then reduce the collection somewhat when I retire.

Hi Everyone,

Help me here, please. Why is it important to know how many clarinets someone has?

I don't get it.

HRL

PS I have more than one clarinet and sax BTW. I really don't care to divulge information on anything of value that I own on a public bulletin board. Am I being too "old-fashioned?"

It's just a bit of fun and interest, Hank, but noone has to participate if they don't want to.

I have just one pair of B&H Symphony 1010s. I would like to upgrade when I can afford it as they are pretty elderly but will probably keep them as a back-up. They were much improved recently with a new mouthpiece (Mike Lomax).

On a completely different subject, your name started me thinking that someone should do a clarinettist's song a bit like Tom Lehrer's one about the periodic table -

"There's Mitchell Lurie, Rico Royal, Reeds Australia, Vandoren
There's even Steur french cut ones if you can get your hands on 'em
You try a Genusa or a BG Revelation,
or tie it on with string, now that's a tricky operation!"

I like the Tom Lehrer style verse (I know his work well) and see great promise for you if you happen to also have the appropriate piano skills.

Nice work. And so Gilbert & Sullivan.

Here is my humble attempt

"I have Buffet, Lurie, Yami plus some very great old instruments
My Selmers are an envy with all their fancy accouterments
Bonade and Luyben ligatures plus some Portnoy vintage mouthpieces
My junk drawer's getting crowded and I'm running out of spaces."

sung to the tune of Tom Lehrer's Elements ditty mentioned above

Nessie1 and Hank Lehrer, bravo!

I like owning old clarinets and learning to restore them because they're an affordable cross-section of musical history. I've got very little money tied up in my vintage clarinets and I don't much worry about exposing their value on the Internet because the world considers most of the clarinets I own obsolete, rather than antique. Even the antiques are worth very little compared to, say, antique violins. Clarinets, unlike fiddles, do not improve with age! I find the variations in clarinet construction, including the intonation compromises, fascinating. Clarinets are more mechanically complicated than, say, trombones or trumpets. I like looking at them, tinkering with them, cleaning them up and making them playable.

Too funny. Thanks. I think that Nessiel and I have continued the Tom Lehrer legacy in a more clarinet-like way.

3 Bb- R13 (Main)
E11 (backup)
Armstrong Student (for when I decide to take a clarinet apart to see how it works :) )

1 A- R13

Other than really wanting a bright green/pink/blue plastic clarinet, I think I'll be OK for a little while.

Very amusing Gordon!

For another good laugh listen to ''NaCl'' written and performed by the Canadian duo of Kate & Anna McGarrigle - it's the story of 2 atoms falling in love!?

This song is on a CD entitled ''The McGarrigle Hour" (1998). It's full of other great melodies. That's just an opinion, of course.

Number of clarinets: My old Voss, looks like buffet knock-off, still used as backup horn. New one: Leblanc Rapsodie, which I really love to play. Arioso C ' also a delight to play mainly at church. I also bought an A clarinet, which still is being resuscitated. More recently I bought an old Kohlert hard rubber Bass. I am still working on technique so it sounds like a clarinet in the clarion register rather than tenor sax. Five clarinets, 2 oboes , 6 recorders; and a partridge in a pear tree. My wife has contemplated using these clarinets on me in an endoscopic manner. Ouch!

Happened (Tuesday) to browse the dreaded auction site and found the 147 listed at $49 with no bidders and slightly more than one hour remaining. Success? I guess so. It arrived Wednesday (!) and plays pretty well.

Two--my Bb and A. Though I'm looking to add a C clarinet, possibly an Eefer and/or bass, but not until after I get a new piano (which we're doing around boxing day, after a couple of families who pay for lessons by the semester, one for 3 kids, one for 2, hand the payments next week, and not until after I move again in the spring.

Most of my Bb's are Buffets, but my favorite two horns are a Yamaha Eb and a Selmer alto (it's my goal in life to play professional alto clarinet...still looking for that job...I'll post when I find it).

I'll play the game though it scares me how far this has gone.

I have two plastic clarinets:

older Yamaha(about 25 years old at least) and in need of new pads, springs, corks and everything(so I don't want to spend an overhaul on i)

14 year old Buffet B-12 that hasn't been played much for the last 6-8 years. 2 wooden Bb's

Two Wooden Bb's:

Buffet Festival bought in 2005 (my main instrument)

Buffet R-13 Prestige from 1994 (Backup)

One Wooden A:

Buffet R-13 Prestige from 1994(Very good instrument)

And Finally one Eefer

Wooden 1975 Buffet in need of overhaul(no model just mib result on the Buffet site).

Selmer CL200 and CL500 at my dad's house in California (clarinets used up through college).

The CL500 is actually two different clarinets (same model, different years) as this one was stolen out of a locker room in junior high school, only to find half of it lying in someone's front yard a week later. So the other half was ordered from the manufacturer.

With me that I use now are a Selmer Series 9 (u model) Bb and a Selmer 55 full boehm A

To set the upper limit to this, I was lucky enough to know Nick Shackleton, and to have the chance to play chamber music using examples from his collection. At that time (about 1980), he probably had only a couple of hundred clarinets, but by the time he died in 2006 he was up to around 900 (not all Bflat...). There is a magnificent printed catalogue (which I'm happy to say is produced by my own University of Edinburgh, who inherited the collection), which illustrates the astonishing variety of technical solutions that instrument makers have tried over the years (http://www.music.ed.ac.uk/euchmi/ucis.html).

Even pre-Shackleton, Edinburgh already had a nice collection of antique instruments (which are beautifully illustrated and discussed on the web: http://www.music.ed.ac.uk/euchmi/ugw/ugwf1a.html), so that probably makes over 1000 in the one place.

Before that a Henry Gunkel
and before that....a JinYin...classified as a CSO but still plays pretty good for me!

I probably only have 3 Bb's because of the rest of the instruments...lol
1 A Clarinet (the pair to the Couesnon)
A Venus Flute, and Piccolo
Fox Oboe
3 Alto Saxes, a Tenor Sax and a Soprano
2 Violins and a Viola

and on loan from some friends....
An Altus Flute that I hope to buy!
A Conn Bassoon....

I THINK that's all of them.....that takes up the 2nd bedroom in the condo lol

Just for fun (all Boehm in Bb):

2 chinese/taiwanese plastic clarinets (17/6) branded "Weinbereger" and "Durbin" (appr. 2000-2006;-)

1 ebonite noname model 19/7 (eventually military model of Amati) without full Eb (appr. 1975-1985)

1 Amati maestro M500 20/7 with low Eb (appr. 1975)

All instruments are in use.

and 1 russian "Orfei" 17/6 (appr. 1990)

But this baby isn't useable due to the very sad manufacturing ;-)

I have 10 Bb clarinets that are currently in playable condition. A few others awaiting overhauls. My R-13 "Vintage" and my mid 60s R-13 are my main players. I one other Buffet top line, a couple of E-13s, one LL, a CT, a white Vito Dazzler for when I'm out marching naked down the middle of the street at midnight and a couple of Accent (B-12 in disguise) plastic clarinets I plan on donating next fall.

I own three, with one on the way:

1. Normandy, unnumbered original model, '50s vintage, unplated german silver keywork. Backun MoBa 67mm grenadilla barrel: I love the sound, it plays in tune, holds its regulation well, and the keywork feels just right and fits my hands perfectly. What's not to like?
2. Vito 7214: For outdoors jobs. Very decent sound, but the action's kinda heavy compared to the Normandy. The best plastic job I could find back in 1994.
3. Pan American Brilliante metal, three-piece, double-wall bell: A gift from my sister. It has a zesty, robust sound and is a screamer in the Altissimo register. The keywork is a bit awkward for the right hand. I need to get it re-regulated.

On the way: a Ridenour Lyrique 576BC. I'm playing outdoors almost exclusively these days, and wanted to upgrade from the Vito 7214. I ordered a Leblanc 7250 (rebadged Vito V-40) to upgrade the Vito, but the one I received was so poorly made I sent it right back. The Lyrique seemed like the most logical alternative.

Well, I don't really appreciate this topic, but moving on...

I have two Bb clarinets, one is mine and the other a band leader gave it to me.

They're both Buffet and the second one is just in case something happens to my clarinet.

Hobbyist, for now. Don't know if that'll change.

I have three - my first, currently taken apart, clarinet is a Leblanc vito from 1996. I also have a Buffet R13 from 2001, and I recently bought an advanced Boehm A clarinet with the original Leblanc stamp that is probably from somewhere in the 1930s.

Yes, I want more. I find that having even three is pretty impressive with my crappy finances, though.

Bb:

Buffet E13*
Yamaha 450
Yamaha 26II

A: F. Buisson Stencil, a wooden model, god knows what it is... had AMAZING tone and control...best clarinet I've ever played probably...but aesthitically looked like someone had driven over it*

other stuff...

Howarth S45c Oboe
Howarth S2 Oboe (In pieces...)
Buffet Artiste Oboe*
Boosey & Hawkes Imperial Cor Anglais

* indicates it was sold... :( ...made little sense to hold onto instruments I was never going to play again!

So badly want that Buisson back....or an Eb clarinet :)

Oh, and I guess I'm a hobbyist...but havent played clarinet for over a year :/

Just a hobbiest player but have a few clarinets and without going and searching them out would have a pretty hard job listing all the musical instruments of all types in the house.
Clarinet wise the kids have got:
Amati Bb, cheap but plays pretty well plastic clarinet
Lyons C clarinet for the little one
I've got
Buffet E11, bough new sometime around 1990.
B&H Imperial 926 bought yesterday, it comes in a buffet case which I guess is about as old as it is, think someone was trying to fool the Buffet mafia?

Also have a Trevor James Alto Sax, traded a Bundy bass clarinet for that, wish I hadn't! May have to see if I can do a trade the the other way!

Must admit when clarinet shopping just recently (as the kids have their eye on my lovely E11) I was looking at new E13s, the equivalent Yamaha or used R13s but when I came across the the B&H I took a bit of persuading to give it try but WOW, knew I'd got to have it within about the first half dozen notes. Rather glad I did as it cost lest than half of anything else I had considered! But then clarinets are very personal things aren't they?
When I bought the E11 it took most of an afternoon to pick which of the half dozen clarinets I wanted and at least half that time to decide between the last two E11s! When the other first clarinet and me at the local orchestra managed to pick up each others instruments, both E11s bought from the same shop a few weeks apart and only about 20 different in serial number, both with B45 mouthpieces and we put our own reeds on them, it was a disaster, suddenly way out of tune, keys not feeling right, missing the high notes!

Currently I have:
B & H Emperor x 2 (1 x wood, 1 x hard rubber)
B & H 1010 (wood)
B & H 926 Imperial (wood)
Couesnon (wood)
A. Robert (wood)
Bundy Mazzeo (Plastic)
Conn (metal)
Buffet Eb (Metal, Albert)
No Name C, (wood, Albert)
Buffet E11 x 2
Besson Westminster (wood)
Selmer Omega, Paris (wood)
Lyon C
Kinder Klari Eb
B & H pocket cornet (fake, made in Pakistan)
Yamaha Alto sax

These I consider a being mine. I also have an assortment of mostly Yamahas, Buffets, Bueschers, Vitos and Jupiters which I have for sale. This list changes as instruments are sold. Sometimes instruments from the first list are offered for sale as they are replaced by better or more interesting acquisitions, or if I come under overwhelming pressure from my long-suffering wife.

A related question .. I have 4 clarinets in wood, one main R 13 and I try to play the others about once per week, cos I was told long silent periods might be bad for the wood. I was also told that pads dont suffer, so i dont need to worry about my plastic Bb and Bundy rubber Bass.
You also see makers recommending a gentle run in period for a new clarinet, and one that has been in the attic for a long time.

Is this ( wood drying out ) a real concern ? and if you have a lot ( 30 +has been mentioned) how on earth can you schedule so many ? Or does it not matter if you leave them for years, but run them in when bringing them back to life ?

If there is a real problem, what's the advice on max period a wooden clarinet can be left unplayed ?

Thanks

Paula, they are an eternal source of temptation though aren't they? Thankfully they are about 30 miles from home and I now work 35 miles in the opposite direction. Last time I went in to buy some reeds I ended up spending over £100 on some reeds (and a pomorico mouthpiece and rovner ligature to go with them ;-) )

Yup Paula, particularly when they start to recognise you and know how to tempt you as with innocent sounding 'we've just got these in, give one a try and tell us what you think' that resulted in the pomorico! The kids Lyons is quite a fun thing (if a little squeaky at times in the hands of 8 year old Chloe!) Though it does cause some arguments if I play it as Chloe doesn't get why it should sound better in the hands of me who has been playing clarinets for 30ish years than it does when she blows into it. Which reminds me a trip to Windblowers may be called for as she is on to her last reed and nowhere else round here stocks them, must resist the shiny new things (though maybe if they have a 926 in A I could be tempted again!)

Whoops, can now add a Clarineo to the list!
Just a quick question about reeds for the above: I am currently using Vandoren V12s 4s on my Peter Eatons. Will I able to use Vandoren Eb V12 4's on the Clarineo or is getting an appropriate reed set up way more complicated than that?

Windblowers strikes?
I think you should be OK, I haven't tried my usual 3 56 Rue Lepics (even if they make them for an Eb) just play on Chloe's 1 1/2 or 2s but it seems pretty forgiving as I think she has had 2 or 3 different types depending on what I manage to find when she needs more!

LOL. It did get a bit out of hand and I'm working on thinning the herd. There's only about 9-10 of those instruments that I really consider to be "keepers".

I have one clarinet short of a divorce--all pro level Buffet, Leblancs, Selmers and Yamahas. I haven't counted for some time, but off the top of my head, five Bbs, three A's, one C, two Eb's and my latest--which almost got me thrown out of the house--a low C Buffet Prestigue bass. My main line sopranos--Leblanc Bb and Buffet A, Yamaha Eb, Buffet C and bass get regular workwouts at rehearsals and gigs. The rest reside in my closet or on the wall of our rec room.

Now please, I hope someone doesn't ask for how many mouthpieces--I'd have to really dig to find all of those.

That would be a challenge. Every clarinetist I know that has been playing for a while has a couple of good mouthpieces and a whole drawer full of not-so-good ones.

I have only three, but my solution is buying very compact vintage cases which take up less living space. I need to sell my Protec overstuffed case because it's needlessly large and doesn't look right lined up alongside my bed's endtable. I have one antique case for my Buffet whose accesory compartment is not wide enough to store my Ridenour thumb rest's (it's exactly two plastic reed holders laid on their narrow side wide). That's my favorite case and it's barely more obtrusive than my wife's smallest pocketbook. Fortunately we don't play guitars .

@Mirko996 What model metal Holton do you have? Is the strange clarinet a half Albert/Mueller, half Boehm keywork or something like that?

Besides: Alto recorder Rössler 1970ties

Only 6, right now ... including two Ridenour Lyriques, two old Selmer Soloist Signatures, a Bundy Model 577 and an old Buffet R13-A.

I know where a 1920s Buffet is ... overhauled about 25 years ago, I might pick that one up ... amazing condition and apparently stored properly and played occasionally. Don't know what pitch standard it is tuned to ...

I parted with my other Buffets R13s, Noblet Bass, Yamahas, Selmer Series 9 E-flat ... etc. a while back.

I'm about to get a MoBa A Clarinet, have a MoBa Bb Clarinet, set of Prestige R-13's, about 5 student clarinets for when someone needs an upgrade (E-11's, etc)
an Eb Clarinet, Ridenour Libertas Bb, Ridenour C Clarinet, and 3 Ridenour Wooden/Silver Keyed G1's. They (aren't produced anymore) - got their last ones for students to choose from too.

I paired down :)

Wow...I just peeked at my post from 5 years ago, and realized how much my collection has grown!

Now...
A pair of Yamaha CSVs
Freeman Eb
Forte C
Kessler Bass

A loaner Eb CSO for my young students that aren't big enough for Bb

And my other instruments:
Yamaha Picc
Di Zhao Flute/Brannen Head

Yamaha Oboe
Fossati EH

Fox 41 Bassoon

Yamaha 61 Sop. and Alto
Yamaha 52 Tenor

Violin, Viola and Cello

This explains why this room feels small....lol

I heard that the Lyrique G1 is a fine instrument ... I got the impression from talking to Ted that they just didn't sell well enough to continue production. Ridenour sold about a 100 hard-rubber clarinets to each wooden one ...?

A shame ... kinda.

However many I buy, the number seems the same...just one shy of the perfect number...

I've seen some pictures of nice looking Collegiates w/gold washed bell, etc... I haven't really heard much about how they play -let us know when you're done fixing it.

Last time I counted, I had 42. That was about a year ago. I buy/sell/rent/lend horns out, so it's hard to nail down an exact number at any time.

6 Ebs (1 Buffet, 5 Selmers)
1 C (Buffet)
~20 Bbs (mostly Buffets, several Selmers, 1 Leblanc)
7 As (3 Buffets, 4 Selmers)
6 altos (1 Buffet, 5 Selmers)
3 basses (1 Buffet, 2 Selmers)
1 contra-alto (Selmer)

I'd like to add a Bb contra and a D clarinet at some point.

Presently I have about 10 - a selection of Yamahas, Selmers, LeBlancs, and Buffets. I try to play each one of them at least once every couple of weeks. The clarinet I have had the longest is a Buffet R-13 with a 90xxx serial number I bought used in 1968; I played this one in orchestra for ca. 30 years. The previous owner said Herb Blayman picked it out for him; it's a fine old instrument. The rarest one is a Buffet A clarinet approx. 100 years old with a "swan's neck" register key.

I have made it a practice to try to give a clarinet to young students whose parents can't afford a decent instrument and rely on a few local band directors to let me know of needs in this area. Have placed ca. 5 instruments thus far. I would urge readers to do this, too, if possible. I'm certain there are many students who would like to learn an instrument whose parents just can't afford it. All of this is anonymously.

I currently have my pre-R13, then I have a wooden Collegiate that I am teaching my daughter on, and I have an Evette sponsored by Buffet, which is actually an Malerne that I am restoring. The goal is to buy myself a vintage R13, and start buying and restoring some to give to the local high school band members.
