For the Long Scrape, I use a custom made shaper tip at -1 and 47mm brass staples of various brands. Always tie to an overall length of 72mm. No variation there. I use a Loree mandrel regardless if the staple fits it exactly or not. I debark the base of the cane because it saves it from cracking. Soak the reeds for 20 minutes in hot water.
In order to have the right "feel" of the amount of tension I use, I do not tie straight from the spool, but make a couple of wraps around my hand. This way, I'd hurt my hand before I tear the string...
I start tying about two or three milimeters backwards from the end of the staple and stop at 46 to 46.5mm; NOT at 47mm, because it is then likely to strangle the reed. Going back, the tie stops midway between the bottom end of the cane and the cork of the staple, in order to save string. I always finish by twisting the tied reed one turn and then tying 3 or more knots, just to make sure.
Things I hold dear: before going back - checking for leaks by blowing inwards where the leaves join each other; ensuring the overlap is to the left and overall length iscorrect and the reed is straight (yeah, all the elementary things...) Better to check that *before* going back.
After tying, I usually apply some nail polish or wrap teflon on the string and the bottom of the reed, in order to ensure no air leaks through. Then I cut the "ears" and file them. After that, merry scraping all in one go, untill the reed is finished. I used to scrape the tip and clip it and then put the reed aside for 24 hours - gave it a very nice opening.
