Why do we put ourselves through such agony? I have a headache about an orchestra rehearsal I have to attend tomorrow night. It's our first one since our summer break and I've thought about skipping out because I only have crappy reeds to play on. Isn't that lame?
Thank god I can actually get my knife sharp. I figured that out in the summer of '99 and out of respect to my first reeds, RIP, I try not to forget!
Dr. Ostoich was playing as sort of a sub in the Cincinnati Symphony but lost the permanent job in April. :( He's a good teacher though, and completely inspired me after several lessons. You're right; I should call him. I need a good kick in the butt to jump start my motivation.
I'm not going to school for oboe so much. My major is music ed, but oboe is my concentration. I've already got one music degree and that has gotten me nowhere. This one should get me a job!
Hey, have you read Blair Tindall's book, "Mozart in the Jungle"? It'll depress the heck out of you if you're thinking of becoming a pro-oboist. She went to Manhattan School and was first sub on the NY Phil list for a stint, also she played in the pit at several Broadway shows. At 34 she gave it all up and went to Stanford for a journalism degree. I highly recommend you read the book; not only is it autobiographical but it also has many statistics and facts about the decline of "the classical music industy" in the world.
