There are some changes which appear to occur in the timbre of an oboe when it is breaking in, though in my experience they are not entirely predictable in nature. In terms of projection, I played for many years with a second oboe who played on a 901, and there never was a projection problem. I think that the Marigaux oboes have a very large sound. As you play any oboe more, you instinctively develop reed techniques which create with the instrument the sound and projection desired. With my Marigaux 2001 models (which for me had a somewhat larger sound than the 901, though I find the 901 very agile and responsive) there was never any lack of projection or fullness.
