 New to the oboe.

Hi Everyone!

I was just presented with an oboe as a gift from my friends at work. After playing the clarinet in school and now just picked it up again after ~30 years+, I always desired to learn to play the oboe and now the opportunity has presented itself; however, I am at a loss to know where to begin.

A Mel Bay book entitled "Fun with the Oboe" was also given to me. It starts with the basics, but appears to be incomplete. For example, it states that you should wet the reed - "not too long" and "not to short" in order to attain the proper tone. But it does not tell you what the right amount of time is appropriate.

In addition I have a lot of clarinet music books (obviously) and wonder would they work with the oboe or should I invest in new books of specifically designated oboe music?

Just as an added note the oboe that was given to me is a Linton. It was taken to a music store near my home and my friend was told that it is an intermediate level oboe that sells new for $2,400.00 and is in very good condition and should not require new pads for about a year. They bought it for $50!! at a flea market.

Any guidance that anyone might offer would be gladly accepted. I'm a 46-year-old steelworker and can use all the help I can get.

Godspeed to all,

Chuck Cobern
