a neat english horn trick

Today i played english horn for a rehearsal of Ein Heldenleben, in the last page there is a disgusting solo with a lot of downward slurs in octaves that mimic the shepherd calls (much like rossini's william tell, in fact that music is a direct quotation of Strauss's own Don Quixote). I really struggled through it and almost embarrassed myself badly. Afterwards i did a bit of research and a friend told me that in Geoffrey Browne's Art of Cor book, there is a segment in it which features this solo. Now i have learned that if you press the low B key during the lower note of the up down slur, it will speak almost immediately without having to over compensate embouchure wise. This applies to both the low D and low G in this excerpt. Hope this will help someone else who didn't know this beforehand!
