One of our local bands played Andy Statman's "Flatbush Waltz" to close out a square dance the other day.
By the waltz book, I presume you mean..."The Waltz Book". Waltzes played at contra dances are generally so boring (yawn). Generally sappy major key waltzes, which from my dancer's point of view, go on forever. Though they are good for inventing and practicing countermelodic runs in the chords over the whole and half notes.
You should get "A little Couple Dansemusik" by Peter Barnes, which in addition to containing more exciting waltzes like "Bethena", also has schottisches, tangos, polkas, polskas, hambos, rags, etc. etc.
