I have to use a Selmer HS* (0.97 tip opening, according to someone here on on another post on sneezy) and currently, a Rico Grand Concert 4, to get my altissimo in tune for sure. This will work with the slightly longer of the two barrels provided with the Patricola horn, and with it pulled out, as well. I can use a 5RV lyre with a Vandoren traditional 3.5, if I use the shorter barrel pushed all the way in, but only if the piano is not flat, and I'm very careful on the high notes. I read Ralph's post below under the reeds topic, and I concur from experience with the need to have easy blowing when you play continuously. In contra, the clarinet is not the electric guitar (the fiddle is the electric guitar), and we only play 2 - 2.5 hrs at a time, with breaks, but it's still plenty of blowing, and these fiddle tunes have no place to breathe. I wish I could use the Vandoren set up but at some point I know I'm going to go flat, and the Selmer is not only in great tune but sounds better, especially in the altissimo.
