In my organic chemistry labs we use parafilm to seal the tops of scintilation vials or roundbottom flasks in order to store them (granted a septum or a cap would be better). We also use it for expensive chemicals that we dont want to become contaminated.
So one day, I took some from the lab (it looks like a roll of paper, and a thin waxy layer can be pulled from it) and cut a small piece off. It stretches pretty well, and a little bit goes a long way since you can wrap it around a good 5-10 times. It's weird to explain, it's like saran wrap but like more stretchy and if rub it along the reed, it can fill in the gaps. It works really well, and you can order a small box that would probably last you the rest of your oboe days.
One advantage to parafilm is that you can make it as thin as you want and wrap it with precision rather, or make it as thick as you want for small leaks, really helpful. My reeds turn out fine after this.
