I have acquired a fine selection of staples (tubes) over the years, and they have varying diameters at the tip. For this reason, measuring a consistent tie-on length still gives me the occasional leaky reed, if the staple was particularly wide.
Tying too short can make the two blades flare, giving a reed that just won't close (rather like trying to use a piece of cane that bows up in the middle). I consider a slightly leaky reed the lesser of two evils.
Also, as has been pointed out, after playing in for a couple of hours/days the wrap can often be removed. As the blades settle against each other the seal improves.
Just a thought: If I tilt my razor-blade a fraction towards me when shaping, the inner-lip of the overlap will be thinner and more flexible and may seal better .. hmm .. worth a try on the next batch.
One day, though, when I am rich, patient, and have enough time on my hands, I will chuck out all of my old staples, standardize on one brand and diameter, tie with perfect consistency, and throw away my roll of cling-film. :-)
