So if I understand it correctly, leaving aside the last few mm of the tip, the european scrapes are relatively simple straight-down scrapes whereas the american scrape is far more elaborate, characterised by an area of less scraped wood called the 'heart' and two scrapes on each side, behind the heart.

Another difference I've seen for myself is that the american reeds seem to have all the shiny surface removed, whereas the european reeds still have approx 60% of the reed unscraped and shiny.

Or is that my teacher being lazy? ;-)
