We all had a good laugh at our clarinettist recently, while sight-reading a quintet movt. in E maj. The clarinet part was written out for a Bb clarinet, and she had never seen so many sharps in her life!
And if you have ever played the Dvorak Serenade for Winds (heh), watch the "synchronized dancing" the clarinettists go through, changing instruments Bb-A-Bb-A-Bb- etc., all within the space of a few bars. I am SO glad I don't have to do THAT.
At least with the oboe, you can make it sound effortless. There are some notes on the clarinet that almost never sound good, no matter how good the player. But I do envy those pianissimos ...
Chris, I'm just an amateur, but I stopped playing for more than six years after a merciless conductor tore me to shreds publicly, during a series of eight performances. Now that I'm back I can assure you it won't happen again. You raise your chin a little (helps with sound production, I believe) and move on, making a mental note to prepare better next time.
We're all looking forward to your next video on youtube!
