Well, this is interesting. Taking this as a hint, I spent some time this afternoon experimenting with other makes of reeds, and found that this Selmer is not happy with Coop's reed (the one I had been using), is not happy with a Goodtoneguild reed, is quite happy with Fox reeds, and is very, very happy with Gower reeds.
So it likes reeds with not very well defined windows and not much of a heart, and is unhappy with reeds that have big windows and a heavy heart. Go figure.
I guess there's some obscure physics reason for that.
