My advice is to make certain that your music director procures a good instrument in good adjustment, and far enough in advance of the concert for you to familiarize yourself with its tendencies. Also, try to locate a variety of bocals to try with it. Find out in advance if the A will be at 440, as that will affect your reedmaking and bocal choice.
The d'amore has its own voice -- much milder and more pastoral than either the english horn or the oboe. I suggest that you look for and relish that timbre, and put aside attempts to make it sound more like its relatives.
