I just bought a batch of goldplated staples on eBay, but have not tried them yet. I sent an inquiry to "The Reed Termite" ( a reed expert by the name of Robert Lemon) about staple materials and this is what he said:
"David,
I could get into a long discussion on staples. I'll try to boil it down to what I think are the basic differences in them.
Brass vs. Silver vs. bronze etc... Brass staples tend to be soft spoken but carry a rich blending texture in the sound. Silver is more bright and has superior projecting abilities in a large ensemble or orchestral situation. Chudnow makes his corkless staples in bronze and now in silver... the sound is large and carries through any ensemble. It is a little difficult to get used to scraping a corkless tube reed... where you might have thinned a reed for brilliance before on a corked tube you would make a reed that was too bright on the corkless. The solution for transitioning from cork to corkless is simple, leave the reed thicker and take your time finishing your first couple of reeds. The differences are small but the results are great in the sound. Gold plated tubes don't have any differences, the plating is cosmetic."
If I'm not mistaken, the Loree gold plated tubes are brass underneath "the glitz", so should sound like regular Loree brass tubes.
I have a couple of Chudnow tubes (gold plated) and I think they are sensational, with a beautiful sound and great intonation. Evidently I have not gotten the nack of making reeds with them yet, as none of the 4 reeds I have made with them really panned out in the end. It's.... "like, totally ironical", huh?
