I did this post on the Chudnow staples, in a response to a staple topic back in June:
"I have bought a couple of Chudnow staples, just to try it. I was scheptical, because from other descriptions of all-metal staples it seemed like they would be 'interesting' to play, though too trumpet-like.
I bought both types (E & S), as another oboist in this thread says, they look fantastic (when new!), and the fit on my mandrel and in the reed socket on the oboe was fine, but the tone was too hard, trumpet-like for me. Both types showed this characteristic. I guess if you play outdoors, where you would like a lot of projection, they are ok, but inside, in a symphony orchestra or in chamber music, it is too much. I guess this goes for all all-metal staples, though I haven't tried those from Nick Winfield."
