Re: Going from trumpet to oboe?

A large number of my students have budgets too limited for purchase of the usual recommendations of Loree(even old ones) Laubin, Marigaux etc .
One student bought a Barrington before she started her lessons with me and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, at a very low price. It has an amazing number of keys usually not on the so called "student" oboes. It is plastic and lacks some of the warmth of more expensive wood oboes, but plays well for begfinning players.
The other brand I have had very good luck with is Bulgheroni student model, which is wood and has a lovely sound and is easy blowing. These are about $1800 at Woodwind/Brasswind, who also sell the Barrington for less than $900. Be sure you talk to their woodwind dept and insist the instrument be tested on every note by one of their double reed employees. They sometimes send out instruments that need adjustment , but are otherwise good buys for the money. If you find you love oboe, you can trade up to a professional instrument later, when you can afford to do so.
The cheapest plastic Yamaha also is a very easy blowing beginners oboe and used ones are reasonably priced since serious students want one with more keys in about 2 years. Lois Barton
