I also somewhat seem to make better reeds out of dark coloured cane i.e. Ghys, Alliaud. I think this boils down to the cane hardness/density (not thickness). Ghys is very soft while Alliaud is just a notch upwards. Notice that while they start to vibrate easily they are also prone so change rather quickly. Now i am trying out Ke Xun, Albion, etc which have a lighter color, and when done right makes terrific reeds too. The color seems to say something about the age of the cane too, but i can't be sure.
