And with these allegedly 'blown-out' instruments, once put into top playing condition with a thorough service or complete rebuild, they do play very freely in comparison to some brand new ones which isn't a bad thing at all.

A local player has a 1930s B&H oboe and it's one of the most free-blowing oboes I've tried. And the same with some old Lorees from the early 1900s, Louis oboes from between the wars and early Howarths I've worked on. Only thing is the ones I've worked on weren't full Gillet conservatoire - mostly thumbplate and ring key dual system with no LH F key, so not what I'd like - even though they did play well.

I know a lot of people tend to discourage others from buying an old instrument saying it's 'blown-out' - it may be in some state of disrepair and may be leaking like a sieve, but get it all working and it'll put a lot of new instruments to shame.
