I find Gekeler One has a lot of material worth going back to over and over again, usually after band season over (like, now) and as time progresses what was hopeless becomes easier, so it's not a finished book for me by any means, and I'm in Gekeler 2 (exercise section) as well, concurrently
In Gek 2, Part II, p26 #5 & 6) I find the arpeggio exercises in C and Am harder to do than similar exercises in G and Em on p30, and F/Dm are not as difficult as C/Am but not as easy as G/Em ... go figure those fingers in different keys!
Yes I enjoy La Tarantelle too, my biggest trouble is playing B natural (been in band 3 years, it's mostly Bflat!) to C# and intonation of the interval between High B and High C# is frequently suspect ... (among many others!)
Melody on p33 is on the revisit list -- unfortunately it's not one of my favorite melodies (tune-wise) so it seldom gets revisited ... however, I've got it pencil marked with lots of B naturals because i still keep playing B-flats, and yes, in Bar 15, the top D# (i play mine on the left key) to High C# to B (natural!) is a workout for Left Index finger (roll open, lift, drop) while working the left D# as well (gotta learn those cross fingerings in 4 flats and 4 sharps) -- this combination concentrates all the work in the left hand which needs more exercise than right (as i'm a rightie)
I introduced myself to my summer teacher two years ago with Nancy Lee on p.40 and i did quite well at the time, at a lively con spirito pace, but then he tried me out on p.41 #8 and my fingers couldn't do the 16ths let alone do them inside neat and tidy ties ... had to work on that little exercise two summers in a row!
p24-25 is on my annual summer revisit list, #2 on p25 is really quite pretty at Andante -- I've drawn bars over the notes where LEb can be held down when doing RDb's -- quite a lot of them ... nice allargando bar 20, a primo tempo bar 21 ... love it when music wanders away from a rigid beat
p.21
I've put a funny cross-eyed face beside #2, nuff said
#1 is very enjoyable
#3 seems like a nice ramble in the country, so i'd interpret it with more rubato than just the rall shown in bar 25, and i like trying to make that finale high Bb as pp and bird-song as possible
p.37 ooh! 3/8 ... and the challenge to keep those eighths at steady pace instead of turning them into triplets !
p. 36 #3 is on my revisit list, bars 9-25 in the second oboe part is a real workout for me ... i've figured out the tune well enough to hum, but my fingers can't do it all yet
i've got some interpretation disagreement with the slur pattern in bar 20, think it phrases more distinctively if the 1st and 4th note are tongued and the other notes slurred like bar 22, what do you think?
looking further ahead, i keep working on p45 #2 Money Musk, absolutely love it, and i'm making progress towards toe-tapping speed, and I'm also very fond of #4 same page, but still haven't got that wicked note combo in bar 7 - it's rocking that B to LEb key that's not working for me yet
The Mozart andante p46 is a killer for fingering those 16ths, but the tune's so familiar it's easy to work out the music in slo-mo
Dutchy -- as for holding down both octave keys (with semi auto system) OK, but i've found the screws work loose on that little cross bar quite readily on my oboe, so i figure it's probably better to release the pressure on the screws more often by letting off 1st 8ve when applying 2nd
I've only got first book Rubank, like it, lots of good marches, hup two three four, i can imagine that big bass drum and the side drum flourishes keeping me on the beat, do you have any of the other 3 Rubanks too?
So you're a hot shot at * two * octaves and arpeggios in D Maj and F now, huh?!
Geez, i'm getting long-winded again, better post now ...
