On new wooden oboes, play them for a maximum of 30 mins a day over the first couple of weeks, then gradually increase the playing time by 5-10 minutes - and always drying the bore after playing and putting it back in it's case. Have it checked after 6 months as there may be some minor regulation adjustments, and then have it serviced every 12-18 months thereafter.

It's best to buy a wooden oboe in late spring or early summer so it's played in by the winter which is the time most wooden instruments (that are new or not played in) split due to central heating and low humidity levels.

Plastic oboes (or ones with plastic top joints) are ready to go from day one, and don't need to be played in as wooden ones.
