The problem with the Romantic era is that most of the concertos in this era are largely biased towards showy works (all fireworks and gymnastics) for violin and piano, and very little for woodwinds.
Which is a shame as symphonic writing is as about as good as it gets here and even though Strauss, as well as Vaughan-Williams, Goosens were still in Neo-Romantics (while others around them weren't), these are really the nearest you can get to Romantic era concertos.
I have a copy of the Horowitz, but still need to work at it (as I do with the others).
