Greetings!

In response to Craig's extremely informative e-mail regarding the use of vibrato, i hereby submit a simple recording of myself playing my very own reed (Very proud 6 month reed maker!), short U-scrape, 72mm total length with 47mm Loree DM staple and a Loree DM oboe. I learn from a Dutch school player but i think i have been tremendously influenced by other schools of playing as well. I think my vibrato is what one might describe as typically Dutch. Some insight into my background, i am a 1 year old high school grad (20) and will be starting my studies in the Yong Siew Toh conservatory in Singapore soon. That makes me an amateur and in no way am i here to compare myself to Craig but rather to provide an interesting contrast to what might be different among different styles of playing - particular in this case the teaching and use of vibrato.

Basically the exercises in which i was taught is no different from Craig's. But instead of using the syllable 'hee' i was taught 'hah' so to not encourage tension. In my demo one can hear that it is encouraged at first to sound really ugly regardless of tone, with full air, and to do a very obvious fluctuation of sound, regardless of pitch. A good way to imagine it is like playing a slow Fortepiano in succession during the course of a long tone. Physically i feel that my abdominal muscles support the loud notes and relax during the piano notes thus one hears a drop in pitch. Eventually through some relaxed but discipline work, it becomes natural and will benefit in adding color and shade to one's playing.

Hope this compliments Craig's already great advice. Thankyou!

Regards,
Howard Ng, Malaysia.

p.s. Rather self indulgent playing and poor english. Hope this e-mail gets its point out clear, =)
