Regarding the octave vent issue, I asked my teacher this the other day, while we were trying to puzzle out what the Sam Hill happened to my oboe while it was out for service. (I had asked whether I might just be better off getting the octave vents replaced.)
Her belief is that octave vents last a long, long time, and that if anything, they would just tend to get a calcium-like deposit in them that could be removed by soaking them in alcohol. However, she didn't specify whether that would be isopropyl or ethanol. Quel domage!
But, I may be in luck anyway, because they're building a big ethanol plant right down the road outside town . . . corn squeezins for yer gasoline.
