It may seem counter ituitive at first, but I believe playing the ehorn helped refine abdominal support by first making the supporting muscles 'stronger' and at the same time more relaxed in doing their job.
With oboe, at least the way I used to play it, there was a lot of tension, excess tension in muscles, throat, etc., and it inhibited movement of air.
Perhaps its more a sense of isolation of muscles so unneeded ones can relax and let the correct ones do the work.
One thing lead to another... and soon the oboe reeds were changing slightly to accomodate more air... and good things happened, throat relaxed and more good things happened and so on.
