Judy -- From your comment about your teacher's statement that you blow too hard into the instrument, I wonder if you are taking in too much air when you breathe. I also live at a high altitude (I see you are near Denver), and understand the impulse to hugely fill the lungs to get an adequate supply of oxygen. However, try experimenting with a smaller breath, which can be more easily 'focused'. Though I am unfamiliar with the concept you mention from opera, perhaps what is being sought there is similar to what is necessary on the oboe -- that is, not an upwards blast of air from the diaphragm area, but a controlled column of air supported from the bottom as well as on its way upwards towards the reed.
