It's always best to seal the inserts when putting them back in as you can never guarantee a good airtight seal with just metal against metal.

Contrary to your teacher's advice, having no sealant at all can create problems - there can be leaks around the well where the wood has moved breaking the bond (as they're usually put in with shellac) and air can leak around the outside, so sealing the inserts can prevent these kind of leaks until you have your tech take the lot out and refit them into the body.

No disrespect to your teacher, but is she a qualified oboe technician to make that judgement? I know I'd never take that or any kind of advice from most teachers I know of as most of them don't even know one end of a screwdriver from the other.
