To loosen up too-stiff reeds, I usually scrap the hump center toward the outer corners, making the outer corner thickness almost as thin as the tip. It may also be necessary to thin the last mm or so of the tip.
To play in the proper pitch ballpark, the reed should crow an unvarying C when blown without the oboe with the lips next to the thread and also with lips on the very tip. The reed with the thread in the mouth can also blow a loose C crow with low C's in it but it will play if the pitch of this crow is a little lower. In any event, the crows must be unvarying in pitch with blowing soft and loud on them. If not, the reed will be unstable and will be difficult to play in tune, especially in the left hand in the second register, so important. If the C crow goes higher with harder blowing, it may be fixed by sharpening up the hump to tip step and also by scraping the center of the hump into the center of the tip. One can make reeds this way and be reasonably sure of good playing reeds without even trying them on the oboe. Always try to play on the very tip with as little as possible of the reed in the mouth.
