Hello,
Well first off on store-bought reeds, some of them only have a "tip" scraped. I would not worry about what the remainder of the reed looks like. You can actually take the wire off the reeds. Wire on oboe reeds is not a good thing. The "staple" of which you are talking about, I think you are referring to the wire. The staple is actually the part that the cane is tied too, which is the cork that goes in the oboe. They are also referred to as tubes. Now if a reed is too difficult for you, it means the tip of the reed is too thick. If you know how to thin the tip yourself, then feel free to do so. If you are unsure, or have never done it before, you might want to consider buying easier reeds, or even buying hand-made reeds. There are many places that sell hand-made reeds (that's a bit of an oxymoron-all reeds are hand-made), but a lot of them when you buy them at a professional level are better to play on than any "store-bought" reeds. If you need any pointers of where to find such places, or even such "persons" who make reeds to sell, let me know and I will do my best to help you. I do make reeds and on occassion sell them too.
Hope this helps you.
