Personally - I wouldn't put reed making on the top of your list for a few years. the trouble is that you will be in a dilemma - is the reed causing the bad intonation/articulation or is it something in your playing technique.
I would stay with the same brand of reed and get to know the 'scrape' well so that you can adjust them to perfection with ease. Then when you are happy - try to make reeds that are 'exactly' the same.
I can't help you with scrape I suspect as I use the British U scrape.
I would say that if you are cracking the reeds whilst scraping them - you might be using a plaque that is not convex - I find this helps as it supports the back of the reed better. Also - if you have been doing some reed making presumably you have a mandrel? - if so try putting the staple onto the mandrel when scraping helpss to make feel more comfortable for me anyway.
