If i'm in a pinch (an absolute pinch!!!) i will CAREFULLY use the file of a small pair of nail clippers to clear out the filmy gunk. This is obviously a less desirable way to do it, but i suppose it works as well as a feather or a pipe-cleaner would.
seeing as i don't have a reed-making kit (although i am shopping around right now) I mostly use what's at hand to scrape out my reeds. i've never ruined a reed because of cleaning it out, so i consider myself lucky.
