I found a wealth of information online about makeing oboe reeds. The kind of information you would expect from a good book. All of it made me understand the extreme importance of a good oboe reed to the player.
I do agree with an earlier poster that most people should find a brand of store bought reed that they can adjust and make the most of it. I'll do that while I'm learning to make reeds.
GMac:
Thanks for the info. I may also try to make a small scraping tool that can be inserted from the oboe end of the reed. I haven't ordered an oboe reed making kit yet, but I am makeing a list now of clarinet and oboe things to order.
corinne:
These two places have oboe reed makeing kits -
http://wwbw.com and http://weinermusic.com
I am trying to decide if I want to order a kit or buy the items separately.
The kits from Weiner Music include -
Pisoni Brand Kit
- plastic handled oboe mandrel
- singlesided knife - plastic handled
- oboe wood cutting block
- polished oboe plaque
- carrying case 52.50
Fox Brand Kit
- singlesided beveled knife
- oval plaque
- fox oboe mandrel - french wood handled
- leather carrying case 56.00
I am thinking about ordering the reed stock that is gouged and folded. I'm assuming that also means 'shaped'.
