I've only seen cheap plating flake off from pawn shop instruments and various cheap items. I've never encountered wear that didn't first exhibit signs of pitting, like tooth cavaties.

Tarnish can look brownish/copperish as well as getting quite black when allowed to really build up.

However white... is someting you see when nickel silver is exposed, which can become green. They keys were probably not completely plated and in time you will see those little areas reveal themselves as the signs of nickel silver being exposed to air and moisture reveal that to you.

My Pearl flute has a problem with bad plating and little green areas appearing where the french arms meet the key center and that is a rather major brand.
