Hi Howard,

I use the Rubank Advanced Method for Oboe (Vols. 1 and 2) since they seem to cover a lot of things. There are quite a few exercises from Barret. I HATE the fingering chart.

Since my practice time is still fairly limited compared to the rest of you, I certainly spend a great deal of time on long tones, scale and arpeggio studies, and finally articulation and finger exercises. If there is time left, I'll work on a sonata or something.

I guess the most important thing that I do is to play everything slowly...gradually building to a faster tempo. I also play by heart (I play by ear VERY well). I've know musicians who can't play a tune unless the music is in front of them. I can hear something on the radio or a recording and pick it out, and play. That's something I enjoy doing when I'm not really in the mood to do a regular practice routine. Actually, I would encourage ALL instrumentalists to play by ear. It's great training and lots of fun.
