Or perhaps the melancholia might be that Juliette can't have her Romeo because they're only Renaissance 1700's not Enlightened 2000's?!

Actually, the first time I ever heard this Adagio was when Gordon Hunt played it as Charles and Camilla entered the church for the blessing of their marriage. It was just exquisite, and exquisitely appropriate.

So, there you have it all -- Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending, as well as the heaping dollop of melancholy.

Perhaps it was the context, but it moved me greatly.
