<As for the teacher aspect....teachers aren't actually the most important for oboist development; they rank about 3rd. 2nd is personal practice, and THE MOST important factor in personal improvement is, of course, the understanding of concepts by the student.>
Hey, d-oboe, you pegged my main issue, right there: "the understanding of concepts by the student."
I've practiced my little lips off, but since I was misunderstanding the embouchure requirements, I got really good at playing with less-than-optimal tone.
And I had a teacher, but she was a bassoonist who had never had to teach a really green oboist before. She couldn't tell me what I was dong wrong. I'm not even sure she thought I was doing anything wrong.
So, perhaps once one understands the concepts, then practice is the next most important thing. But without a teacher or a crystal ball or just dumb luck, how are we to understand the concepts?
A decent teacher comes first, in my book.
