PLAY AT THE TIP!

Sounds to me that you ain't doing any mistakes! There is a famous phrase for brass players where they practise syllables by way of repeating: The tip of the tongue to the top! Not only is your method acceptable, it's pretty much one of the standards of teaching tongue technique.
